Roses Love Sunshine, Violets Love Dew...

Down in the valley, the valley so low,
Hang your head over, hear the wind blow.
Hear the wind blow, dear, hear the wind blow,
Hang your head over, hear the wind blow.

Roses love sunshine, violets love dew,
Angels in heaven know I love you...
Know I love you dear, know I love you,
Angels in heaven know I love you.

Write me a letter containing three lines,
Answer my question: Will you be mine?
Will you be mine, dear, will you be mine?
Answer my question: Will you be mine?

I learned this quaint, old fashioned love song at school when I was ten years old. I've always remembered it and always liked it.  About a month ago I heard the song again on Elizabeth Mitchell's album, You Are My Little Bird and it's become a favorite bedtime lullaby for my wee Bloom.  If you like, you can hear a clip of it here (listed as track number 116.)

Perhaps tonight you'll rock someone to sleep to the tune of this song, too...

  1. My father sang that to me in his beautiful voice, I sang it to my children who now sing it to theirs. One of my all time favorite songs...tine and lyrics.

  2. The whole album is a favourite here - we listen to it over and over in the car to and from school and I think of you everytime it starts. Think I am going to get her other albums.

  3. I've started singing my kids to sleep for the first time since they were babes (my husband took over bedtime routines because I was exhausted after being home with them all day)...my two older kids have "their" songs, but my youngest...well, I used to sing her nursery rhymes. THIS will be her song..I get teary and goosebumpy every time I hear/sing it! Thanks for sharing.

  6. I had totally forgotten about this song though I knew it as a child. I don't remember singing it to my children (who are grown now) and regret that, but they did get their fill of Danny Kaye singing Hans Christian Andersen and the Elephant Show was a favorite of all of our. Thank you for the sweet memories. (I have to say that I smile everytime I see your blog header - those birds are wonderful!)
